Lyse Min Energi
Product design
From November 2021 until mid-2022, I defined much of the initial design direction for version 4.0.0, a major redesign of Lyse's existing Min Energi app. The redesign focused on helping customers understand electricity prices and consumption during Norway's sharp increase in power prices.
Redesigning an existing app
Min Energi existed before I joined the project. Version 4.0.0 was built as a replacement for the existing Lyse app on iOS and Android. Its first release focused on consumption, electricity prices and invoices, with a wider roadmap for connected chargers, equipment in the home and better data from electricity meters.
The work took place during Norway's power-price surge. Customers needed clear information about changing prices and how to interpret them, regardless of how interested they were in electricity or how comfortable they were with technology.
Leading the design of version 4.0.0
I joined the cross-company team from Lyse, Olavstoppen and Bouvet as its sole designer. I defined the initial product structure, interface and complete customer flow, then delivered a detailed interactive prototype for the developers, including the intended animations and transitions.
A junior designer joined around two months into the project, which made me the effective design lead. Near the end of my time on the project, another lead designer joined and overlapped with me during the transition. Parts of the initial direction can still be seen in the app today, although later teams have continued to develop it.
Choosing what to explain
The difficult part was understanding how people made sense of electricity prices, then turning the subject into information they could digest. Internal stakeholders also proposed advanced features. I had to weigh those requests against the need for a product that remained understandable to customers who did not already know the energy market.
What the early reviews indicate
Before version 4.0.0, written App Store reviews repeatedly criticised the limited and outdated information. Two reviews posted shortly after the redesign praised the added information and how easy it was to find, while later reviews also reported login and stability problems. This is a small qualitative sample, and I no longer have reliable internal measurements from the period.
